ILL Manors Print

  • What are the key conventions that help you identify the print text (e.g. title, central image, review quotes etc.)?

    1. What design features help identify the Ill Manors brand?
    2. What examples of synergy can you find with the broadcast platform or other print examples?
    3. What are the key conventions that help you identify the print text (e.g. title, central image, review quotes etc.)?
    Billboard cover
The key conventions of a the billboard advert is that its a very large and dominant for the audience get a glimpse of it.As the audience seeing it are the motorway or what not so they are going past and probably only have a few seconds looking at it.So they billboard has to automatically in the first second suggest that its a billboard advertising a film. The colour is not important but the text has to be bold and bright. So the audience can then see the title and the central image and understand the ratings of it being good. All 5 or 4's star ratings so they would know its a really good film. The design is amazing as the whole them is dark and gritty and you can see the council estate behind the central image in the background is made to look more like poverty and dangerous. Also the design of the central image is very effective as the title ill manors is being surrounded by the characters gun around it.This could imply that ill manors or the area ill manors is surrounded by the guns or violence.A key example of synergy between the two platforms is the location, which is clearly presented throughout the music video and trailer - Council house estates in London. This reiterates the setting for Plan B's narrative, while highlighting the fact that Ill Manors' will be a film to escape in and learn about the truth behind the urban world.

    Album cover

The key conventions of a CD cover include a central image of the artist, followed by the name of the album - in this case, 'Ill Manors'. This is a strong way in identifying the print type as it is most common for the artist them self to feature on the cover to sell their brand identity. In particular, the bottom right hand corner holds an 'parent advisory' warning label, addressing the fact his music will be aggressive in terms on language and vocabulary. The design feature of a razor blade disecting the middle ground, which has 'Plan B' carved into it, creates the strong indication that the music one will be presented with will be raw, sharp and gritty. In addition to this, through the positioning of Ben Drew in relation to his surroundings, where he is somewhat on 'top' of his environment, underlines the fact that this is his own view towards the urban environment - a journey through his eyes, that he will take us on with this music. In particular, he is propped between the two black pillars, spelling out 'Ill', addressing the fact that he is a product of the urban environment. An example of synergy between the album cover and a broadcast platform would be the fact that this frame is the starting shot in his Ill Manors' music video, where he addresses the audience in his poetic/rapping tone about the journey into the "urban world", that he is momentarily going to take us on.

This movie poster shows the more cynical side of ill manors with the more crazy psychotic edge to it, the use of triangles and close proximity show a lot of craziness. Also how two of the central characters are smiling show a very evil look. The movie poster also uses the convention of a quote from critics that will automatically make the audience believe what they read. The use of the 4 stars also give the audience a sense of what the film will be like. The background image shows council flats, this tells the audience will be set in these areas and can attract strugglers as they may want to watch a film that relates to them. The form of synergy used is a small text underneath that features the album release of the soundtrack composed by plan b.
