ILL Manors Print

  • What are the key conventions that help you identify the print text (e.g. title, central image, review quotes etc.)?

    1. What design features help identify the Ill Manors brand?
    2. What examples of synergy can you find with the broadcast platform or other print examples?
    3. What are the key conventions that help you identify the print text (e.g. title, central image, review quotes etc.)?
    Billboard cover
The key conventions of a the billboard advert is that its a very large and dominant for the audience get a glimpse of it.As the audience seeing it are the motorway or what not so they are going past and probably only have a few seconds looking at it.So they billboard has to automatically in the first second suggest that its a billboard advertising a film. The colour is not important but the text has to be bold and bright. So the audience can then see the title and the central image and understand the ratings of it being good. All 5 or 4's star ratings so they would know its a really good film. The design is amazing as the whole them is dark and gritty and you can see the council estate behind the central image in the background is made to look more like poverty and dangerous. Also the design of the central image is very effective as the title ill manors is being surrounded by the characters gun around it.This could imply that ill manors or the area ill manors is surrounded by the guns or violence.A key example of synergy between the two platforms is the location, which is clearly presented throughout the music video and trailer - Council house estates in London. This reiterates the setting for Plan B's narrative, while highlighting the fact that Ill Manors' will be a film to escape in and learn about the truth behind the urban world.

    Album cover

The key conventions of a CD cover include a central image of the artist, followed by the name of the album - in this case, 'Ill Manors'. This is a strong way in identifying the print type as it is most common for the artist them self to feature on the cover to sell their brand identity. In particular, the bottom right hand corner holds an 'parent advisory' warning label, addressing the fact his music will be aggressive in terms on language and vocabulary. The design feature of a razor blade disecting the middle ground, which has 'Plan B' carved into it, creates the strong indication that the music one will be presented with will be raw, sharp and gritty. In addition to this, through the positioning of Ben Drew in relation to his surroundings, where he is somewhat on 'top' of his environment, underlines the fact that this is his own view towards the urban environment - a journey through his eyes, that he will take us on with this music. In particular, he is propped between the two black pillars, spelling out 'Ill', addressing the fact that he is a product of the urban environment. An example of synergy between the album cover and a broadcast platform would be the fact that this frame is the starting shot in his Ill Manors' music video, where he addresses the audience in his poetic/rapping tone about the journey into the "urban world", that he is momentarily going to take us on.

This movie poster shows the more cynical side of ill manors with the more crazy psychotic edge to it, the use of triangles and close proximity show a lot of craziness. Also how two of the central characters are smiling show a very evil look. The movie poster also uses the convention of a quote from critics that will automatically make the audience believe what they read. The use of the 4 stars also give the audience a sense of what the film will be like. The background image shows council flats, this tells the audience will be set in these areas and can attract strugglers as they may want to watch a film that relates to them. The form of synergy used is a small text underneath that features the album release of the soundtrack composed by plan b.

    Plan B Radio 1

How popular is BBC 1 radio? What caused a decline in the average listening figures over recent years?

BBC radio one is broadcasted and operated by the 'British Broadcasting Corporation' who gets paid through TV licence instead of being a commercial institution. the broadcast popular music from hip hop, rap, indie, RnB, this could appeal to people that appreciate urban cultures. the recent decline was due to the younger generation preferring virtual ways of listening to music like YouTube rather listening to the radio because they have less control as to what they want to listen to.

Who is the target audience for BBC Radio 1?

Radio one taget young adult 16-29 because they broadcast music that's associated with young adult like RnB and hip hop, however figures in 2008 show that the average age is 33, this could be due to them being more accessible to radio because they own a car and drive while listening to the radio.

How does PlanB promote ill manors in this interview?

He promotes ill manors by making his interview personable, talking about his life and the struggles he faced growing up,, he wanted to recreate his struggles and educate so young teenagers in urban poorer countries don't struggle as much as he did.

What are the representation of PlanB in this interview?

This interview shows his stubbornness because he talks about how he wants things done a certain way and if that is not achieved to his satisfaction the film isn't going to be successful. He doesn't hear or listen to the views of other people. He is represented as a man with a goal determined and his only purpose not being to entertain but to educate and change society for the better.

    Jonathan Ross show

    Television-

    1) What is the history of the Jonathan Ross show? What channels has it appeared on? Why has Jonathan Ross been a controversial media figure in the past?

The Jonathan Ross Show is a British talk show presented by Jonathan Ross. It was first broadcast on ITV on 3 September 2011 and airs on Saturday evenings following the conclusion of Ross' BBC One chat show, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, in July 2010.

Jonathan Ross seems to challenge the ideologies in his show and always seemed to challenge this in his shows which lead to a fired up controversy.

    2) Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.

This interview appeals to the higher class of people I can instantly say this because of Plan B's clothing tells us that this was a formal interview considering that Ben Drew is a rapper and came from what you would call the 'hood' so is more informal than usual and doesn't usually dress smartly because of his personality. Also the show usually features more higher class people and not usually people like Ben Drew. Also, the language Ben Drew uses tells the reader he is reaching for the politics and powerful people out there because of his formal language.
    3) What is the audience appeal for a programme like the Jonathan Ross show?

The Jonathan Ross show attracts the affluent audience because of the people that are brought on to the show every episode but also the channel which is ITV 4 attracts the mainstream audience that watch free view TV.
    4) How is Plan B (the brand) represented in this text?

Plan B is presented as a dedicated and hard working character that is more formal than he actually is because Plan B is able to adjust to situations and can control his colloquial language and only use it in appropriate.

    SBTV

    Broadcast/Online-

    1) What does this tell us about Plan B's intentions in making the film?

This is a short clip created by SBTV to show the audience what happens 'behind the scenes' when creating Plan B's film Ill Manors. This shows that Plan B wishes to make this movie a big hit because of his dedication that is shown throughout the clip. We see this in Plan B's mission to stay awake while working on the movie this shows his dedication and will to get this movie going. Also, he also says that he sleeps in the same room on the floor so that he doesn't waste time and is able to make working as productive as possible.

    2) What do we learn about the production process for Ill Manors?
We as the audience learn that the majority of the production of Ill Manors is done by Plan B the director himself. We also learn that the production isn't as glamorous as it seems because it shows hardship and struggle when producing and creating the film. The audience know this because he says he has to sleep on the floor to make sure 'this gets done'.

    2) What is SBTV? Research the channel and explain how it became successful.
Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.

SB.TV Global Ltd, also known as SB.TV or SmokeyBarz, is a multi-faceted company run by a small team of young people who work on web-based viral content at different music-based events. The media platform has its origins and roots in urban music. Most of its content can be seen on its own YouTube channel, which was created on 2 November 2006, or on the official SB.TV website. Much of the content includes unprofessional footage, or "street-shot" freestyle raps and music videos. However, even though its earlier uploaded videos contained entirely amateur footage, the channel's latest uploads contain professional recordings.

It was Jamal Edwards' dedication that allowed this channel to gain success. Jamal Edwards founded the channel in 2006 when he was only a teenager and started to progress quickly because of the originality of his idea.

    3) What is the audience appeal for an interview like this? How does the opening of the clip emphasise this appeal?

It would have to be teenagers or young adults because it was produced by SBTV who wish or hope to attract a similar type audience. Also the humour and comedy used throughout the clip of Sean sneaking in when he isn't allowed to creates a sense of humour that teenagers can relate to or will find entertaining.

    4) How is Plan B (the brand) represented in this text?

Plan B is presented as a dedicated character because of his state when trying to create and produce the film Ill Manors. From the clip you can see his dedication clearly because he is sleeping in the same room he works at and sleeps in his shoes which shows his dedication to complete the movie. He says that he has been working like a dog the simile creates an effective image for the audience because it shows them how hard and dedicated he is in producing his movie.

    Music Video Research

The ill Manors Official Soundtrack album is of the hip-hop, grime, soul genre and was released by Atlantic Records as well as published under the Warner Bros. label by British musician Plan B (Ben Drew) in 2012 to accompany his directorial debut film under the same name. The unsettling album was promoted by other artists such as Labrinth and Kano who had partaken in the production.

The ill Manors track was initially released as a single which soon was accompanied by a dynamic and socio-politically controversial music video featuring cuts from Drew's film and footage from the 2011 London riots. The track was successful in regards to peaking at #6 on the UK singles chart in April 2012. Overall reception of the ill Manors album was positive with mostly 4+/5 review scores and the album was shortlisted for the 2012 Mercury Prize, becoming the first soundtrack album to be nominated. ill Manors was also nominated for Brit Award - MasterCard British album of the Year Award.

Reception of the track included attention from MP Jamie Reed who described it as 'excellent', Tim Walker from The Independent stated it "an all-time great protest song", while David Smyth of the London Evening Standard praised Plan B's decision "to say something so bold." A contrasting opinion was advocated by Samuel Breen, also writer of The Independent, who described the song as "a cliché riddled attack on politics that feels calculated, impersonal, and disingenuous"

    Ill Manors: TEDx Lecture

    1) Make notes on the lecture: focus on Plan B/Ben Drew's views on the opportunities for young people in London and how these inspired Ill Manors.
Plan b talks a lot about the opportunities for young people in London in the school holidays for example. As its hot outside and they want to be able to do something productive and so they cant no more as the UK had been in recession and cut the funding for community centre and other organisation who don't receive payments other than children being satisfied and being happy. So know the youth whenever they go outside to play they have nothing better to do than just muck about and cause trouble and get into trouble. Therefore plan B describes the opportunities for young people to be very limited.
    2) What are Plan B's beliefs/politics? What are his values/ideologies? Explain your answers.
The youth that he talks about that are misbehaving he beliefs are like him and they come from poor backgrounds and broken families. So he beliefs that they are not giving any positive regard they have no role models or guider to tell them they can do it and be whatever they want. They only thing they have is rap music as that their role models and so they listen the gang violence, drug use and sex they talk about. So he beliefs that school or other organisations like community center or local football teams should take them in not only to take them out of trouble but to also make them believe they can be something and not believe that no body cares about them.
    3) Who is the target audience of the TEDx lecture? Demographics? Psychographics? How do you know? How does this compare to the audience for his music/films?
The target audience surprisingly are the older generation or the politicians themselves. I know this because of the audience from the TEDx lecture were mostly older adults. I think Ben Drew has purposely planned to aim this at those because they are the people that seem to 'demonise' the youth. Also, he believes that they are the people that have the power to change the youths' lives by making a change in areas where there are the most disadvantaged. I know this because Ben Drew also speaks about the fact that 'every person watching the lecture knows one person who is less fortunate than them that they can help'

    4) What does Plan B say about the media? Explain how this can be linked to Cohen's media theory of moral panicsRead this summary of moral panics and the definition from Wikipedia and use them in your answer.
Plan B believes the media are ignorant and only target the people from the lower backgrounds such as the council estate families. So that's were they word, plan b believes, the media fueled the fire and made it okay to say the word chav on regular basis just because of what people were and where they are from. Also plan b talked about a story about how group of lads ,youths with hoodies, help him from a sticky situation. He told a newspaper in a interview and then they manipulate the story and forgot about the part were he was saved. They stop the story at were plan b was in a bad situation and they concluded that youths from the council estate are trouble and so they try  cause a moral panic in the population.Making society go against the youths of this country.

    Ill Manors Music Video

1.) How is it typical of a music video?

The Ill Manors music video contains many of the conventions of a typical music video. One convention that is typical is the fast pace editing, this is shown throughout the video and contains many different cuts in the video which creates a hype to the audience. Another key convention that this music video includes is the performance of the main artist. Plan B himself was the performer of his own music video. Another convention that was used is narrative Plan B told a story throughout the music video.

2.) How does it represent the London riots/rioters?

The music video does not in anyway condemn or support the riots it simply justifies it in a music video that protests their right. The representation from the video is that the youth today are damaged and troubled but the music video blames it on society and politics and justifies a reason for their behaviour from the riots. Although Plan B was looking for a different approach I think that he reinforces the stereotypes without wanting or meaning to. The video makes youth seem very violent and disturbed because it includes real footage from the rights and also cuts of youth behind Plan B holding fireworks and acting very aggressive. Their aggressive behaviour in the video intimidates the audience and may only give society more of a reason to outcast those people and see them as a danger when in actuality Plan B's aims were to portray them as youth that have been forced by society and politics, into the life they live of violence and trouble.

3.) What audience pleasure does it offer?

It offers the audience a sense of excitement because the audience watching the music video feel hyped and excited while watching youth in the music video acting aggressive. Also, the footage from the real riots makes people feel superior because they gain pleasure from watching others preform crime and cause havoc. Also it gives them pleasure because even though they aren't involved in the criminals' behaviour they still get that hyped vibe in which they wan't to be doing what they see because it seems fun and attractive.

4.) How does the music video help to promote the film?

The music video promotes the video very well because the music video has a narrative(tells a story) this is unique because most music videos are only made for entertainment but the Ill manors music video is good for two purposes, promoting the video and telling a story. The music video advertises the film because it gives across the same message that is given in Ill Manors which is the youth today are damaged by society. Also, the title of the music video is the title of the film so this instantly promotes the film. In the music video the title of the film is partially mentioned so tells the audience it is about what happens in society where kids are disadvantaged "because my mind is Ill" this is saying that the youths minds and way of thinking is damaged and destroyed by society and the government.
