One influential tradition in media research is referred to as 'uses and gratifications' occasionally needs and gratifications. This approach focuses on why people use particular media rather than on content. In contrast to the concern of the 'media effects' tradition with what media do to people

-Diversion is a way to get out of your real life by entertainment.EastEnders is a prime time TV Soap that is watched by a large audience. It helps people with diversion because this show consist of dramatic and emotional scenes with a flowing story line.The audience focus on it so closely that they forget the lines of their own reality which helps them deal with day to day problems.

-Surveillance is keeping an eye on people to get information on how they live.
-Personal identity is celebrity you enjoy and have a link with your peers about it.
-Personal relationship is feeling something for a character of some sorts. in some cases Big brother helps people build emotional affection to characters. This is because the audience will be watching a bunch of people living inside one house and therefore, some members of the audience may start to feel a particular way about one of the many characters.
