Exam re-write Q2 LR
WWW:some very solid answers and this would be a comfortable C grade if q2 was stronger.
EBI: Camera work major is weakness.your don't really say anything!
note taking perhaps a factor -you need to organise your notes.
In the opening scene of this film the camera work used the work used was pan as as the fire and lighter scene was occurring.Pan is good way to make the audience feels is like they are there and apart of it.also the used wasn't a high pan to cover the setting.the pan used was very effective as it was the the low one which covered all grounds moving across the floor.this would allow the audience to fill apart of this dramatic scene as the five is moving across the floor.
Also a tilt was used after the gun shots and sirens occurred to make the police seem closer than expected.the audience believe that the police will have authority and look and look the villain which is always the ending in a typical movie.
High angel shot of keaton emphasises his powerlessness and foreshadows his deaths.this
low angle shot of killer emphasises his power and control in scene.
Mcu on keaton allows audience to make emotional connection and see make-up that shows his desperation and hopelessness.
killers face is not is not shown ;instead ,close ups on shoes, lighter and gun.

Narrative theories Analysis
Never Back Down:
Barthes
Enigma code:The enigma code in the trailer is that the new boy in school is harassed and forced to fight and because he gets beaten up once he decides the only way to stop them is train and become better than them.So the enigma codes is the part when his girlfriend, who he initial steals from the villain, Says "walking away and doing nothing is not the same thing" and replies "good because im not doing either one."this code revels to the audience that he is going to fight back.
Action codes:Its hard to pin point one action code in a trailer because it points them all out so the main action code is at the beginning where the villain humiliates him in front of everyone ,that goes to the school, and so the code is when the villain puts on the kick boxing gloves and says "what the hell are you doing here i your not going to fight".
Propp:
In the film trailer we can understand that jack the guy is that hero and the villain is the bully who is the best fighter in town. Then we understand that the trainer who motivates the hero is the helper and the girlfriend is the princess.
Todorov:
Equilibrium is the new kid in school and school is going well as he is fitting in well and doing well in lessons. However the disequilibrium is when the school finds a video of the jack fighting and being very skilled.this is where the problems start and everyone starts picking on him to fight and he doesn't want to.Creation of new equilibrium is jack being fighting champion and having the hot girlfriend and earning the respect.
Barthes:
Enigma code:Is Liverpool slipping up in the dying seconds of being a step closer to winning the league for the first time since 24 years.Winning 3-0 then being caught up 3-3.allowing man city to pick up points as they have a game in hand.
Action codes:Is the final whistle which release the crystal palace fans chanting and taunting liverpool. As they liverpool being devastated with the result.
Propps:
we understand the narrative is the story and so the story here is liverpool having a outstanding season however it doesn't come down as a fairy tale ending.the villain would be Crystal Palace. The hero being Liverpool players especially Luis suarez. The princess is the premier league title.
Todorov:
Equilibrium is Liverpool having a brilliant season going with a 11 game winning streak and scoring 102 goal in 38 games. Then the disequilibrium is that Liverpool points drop in 2 games between Chelsea and crystal palace and they lose the trophy to their rivals Manchester city. The creation of new equilibrium is that overall Liverpool have achieved their main target and that was top 4 and really couldnt of not asked for a beaten season.
Barthes
ENIGMA CODES: The making of the clones and the Ronaldo
gathering the real footballers
ACTION CODES: He brings them all together, suggests they
will fight back and restore order.
Propp:
The Villain is the man cloning footballers and the clones
themselves. The helper is Ronaldo. The Princess Football as a global game. The
Hero is Ronaldo and the real footballers.
Scene Editing Analysis
Fast Five 750 Analysis
This scene is a very important scene in the film as it was supposed to be the climax off all the bad things Torreto and his crew done and so the rock goes in for the arrest however the tables turn.
The beginning of the scene is a at a party with drinking and women and flashy cars so everything moves very quickly in the camerae movement and the pan which follows the rocks team.the editing very fast paced just like the sound which is very fast.this is the walking scene everything seems to be going fast and the audience are excited for this confrontation as they tension was built so well be the editing.
This is the best part now because the editing and sound is flipped so quickly as its to the slow temped music of the drum and the slow editing moving from speaker to speaker.the transition was amazing from a very fast beat high tempted begging it switched quickly. Also the the editing is best when the camera is not on the talker its on another character allow the audience to see their reaction. So when The Rock said they are under arrest the camera turns to Tyrease to see his facial expression to the audience.
then the dialogue is going very slow but then The Rock confronts them about their past and the music gets to a high pitch and that is when Torrito, who was cool at the beginning and calm ,losses his cool and refuses to listen to the officer. This suggests to the audience even though The Rock has more authority over them ,and has their personal backgrounds and criminal information, they still don't respect him.the editing from then is very fast paced as the sound of digetic music which is similar to hearbeat sound is put in.to demonstrate the calmness of the hero, Torrito.
From then the music is very fast leading up to the officers pointing their guns at the Torreto and his team. Then again the music is very slow and dramatic and the camera angel changes to have the 2 powerful men in one shot as they are fact to face. The music leads into his speech of this not being america and then the climax of him screaming out "THIS IS BRAZIL".This is effective as when the non diegetic sound comes into play as the guns are loaded to have some action codes to the audience that something will occur and the audience are drawn in.
This is then where the camera movement is very fast to observe Torreto teams facial expression as they have the upper hand in this face off and so they all look very fierce and ready for battle.this would switch to a aover shoulder shot to Torreto as the rock collogues advises that they are not in the position to this here as they are low on men.through out this the editing is very smooth and quick pulling from the rock to torreto.
then the music is lowered as the rock has an important line where he tells torreto that this is not over and they will meet again.Suggesting that he will come and arrest him and him and put him and his team in jail.
Overall this scene is very fast paced editing with the high tempted music to keep up with the Rock following torreto's men all over Brazil and final coming to catch them .as the audience has been through the rock's adventure in trying to find him and so they understand the rocks frustrating in unable to capture them.

Narrative Notes
Narrative patterns
Linear Pattern: progresses forward towards a resolution -
Beginning, Middle and End.
Multi-strand Narrative: popular in broadcast TV (e.g. soaps)
and film. Involves more than one narrative running parallel involving different
characters and locations.
Documentary narrative: this may revolve round a central
theme (e.g. troublesome neighbours) or group of people.
Long-running TV series such as Breaking Bad or The Wire have
one major narrative and lots of mini-narratives. The major narrative runs over
the series, the mini narrative may be resolved within an episode.
Narrative theories
When studying narrative in Media, we need to be able to
identify what the story is and how it is being told. There are three key
theories we need to learn and apply:
Enigma and Action Codes - Roland Barthes
Barthes suggested that stories have certain codes that
audiences understand and respond to.
ENIGMA codes: control how much we know and help hold our
interest. It creates mystery during the narrative.
ACTION codes: events or actions in the story that are
important in developing the narrative, e.g. a gun being cocked signifies that a
violent scene will follow.
Todorov: equilibrium
Tzvetan Todorov proposed a theory of equilibrium:
Equilibrium: An existing state of harmony
Disequilibrium: Equilibrium is disrupted by an unfortunate
event or evil character which leads to a chain of events involving conflict
New Equilibrium: The evil forces are defeated, the conflict
is resolved and harmony exists once more
Vladimir Propp came up with a list of stock characters in
narratives by examining Russian fairytales. He called them the seven spheres of
action:
The Villain: Creates a complication in the narrative
The Donor: Gives the hero something that will help in the
resolution
The Helper: Helps the hero in restoring the resolution
The Princess: Has to be saved by the hero
The Dispatcher: Sends the hero on a task
The Hero: Central protagonist, saves the day and restores
equilibrium
The False Hero: Rare character that appears to be good but
is revealed to have been bad all along
